Things They Are A Changin
I have sure been missing in action. Sorry about that. I really wanted to sit down and update this site so many times but it was like my fingers were stuck in cement. I feel like now is the time and this is the place to start up again. I really love blogs because you can go back and relive the highlights of your life over the past few years. I want to be able to do that. I stopped writing in my journal and blogging both here and on my photo site. I will be getting back up to speed this week. Boy a lot has happened the past two years. The economy has taken a toll on so many Maui wedding businesses. We are hanging in there and having the oldest Wedding company on Maui really helps. I am very excited for what lies ahead and even though we are facing some huge challenges I am confident the best is yet to come. More soon.

Easter. Resurrection and New Beginnings!
I am so glad that Easter 2009 is here. When you go though times where it seems that all is taken away, things are hopeless, and darkness surrounds you that is the perfect time for restarts. When all is stripped away then everything that comes your way from then on is new. The way you see life and the way you look at things around you changes. This has been a year to look forward to a resurrection. We are ready.
We have had some weird weather on Maui this past year. Wetter and much colder than usual. Today is bright, sunny, warm with light trade winds expected. A great illustration and picture for what I believe this year is going to be like. I believe that the sun will be shinning on my family this year. We are so blessed to have friends and family like we do. Life is good and God is great. Happy Easter and I hope everyone that will open up will let the love of God fill them in a new way today that will let them experience the real Resurrection power of the Almighty.

Good Friday?
A blessed Good Friday to all of you!
Why do we call it "Good" when such a bad thing hap
pened,namely the death of Jesus?
For that matter, how could it be a good thing that God in human form would die such a tragic death.
We could apply the same question to tragedy in our own lives.
Why did this happen?
Could anything good ever come out of it?
We call this 'Good Friday' because the greatest good imaginable resulted.
The satisfying of the righteous demands of God almighty as Jesus died in our place.
And God will in His time,"Bring good out of bad" in your life as well as you walk with and Glorify Him.
(Greg Laurie)
I have not been on this blog for most of last year. Those that follow my Facebook have heard all kinds of vague suggestions of the tragedy that hit our family. I could not talk about it for over a year. It devastated our family and made this year the hardest year of our lives. Even though the economy was quite a blow, we did not even hardly notice it because of the events that struck our family this past year. I completely agree with Pastor Greg Laurie on this subject and since it is good Friday I thought it would be a great time to start posting again since we are in the process of rebuilding our lives.
It was Superbowl Sunday 2007.We were sitting in Church. The sermon was about the consequences of sin in our lives. About half way through the sermon we got the call. Our son Michael had been out partying all night and ended up in the hot tub at his condo complex at about 5 in the morning with 3 other friends. They had all been drinking a lot, had snorted cocaine and were in a 106 degree hot tub for over an hour. This was a recept for disaster and one of the worst possible things happened. One of Michael's friends drowned. Michael was accused of second degree manslaughter ( had some part in an accidental death). We were devastated as we know that it would not be in Michael to hurt anyone. The events over the next few days are too complicated to go into here but a "run away grand jury" decided to up the charge to Murder with no evidence of intent. There was no way in the world that Michael intended to kill anyone, especially a friend. We had to pool together all of our financial resources and hire an attorney and spent a year preparing Michael's case. He sat in a county jail for almost 14 months waiting the trial. This all happened in Oregon where there are some of the harshest and craziest laws and each of them seemed to creep into Michaels case. The trial lasted almost a month and in the end Michael was found innocent of Murder by a 12 to 0 vote by the jury. He was convicted of manslaughter because of one of the very unjust Oregon laws. He was sentenced to 10 years in Prison with no possibility of time off for no previous record or even for good behavior. Another crazy Oregon law. We will be appealing his case but in the mean time our son, who I went on mission trips to Mexico with, sits in an Oregon prison because of horse play gone terribly wrong and because of the stupid mutual participation in excess drinking and drugs. It was a night that could have just as easily left either Michael dead, Fred in prison or both young men dead.
This event paralyzed our family and made it hard to function. For several weeks we were in serious shock. One of the biggest evidences of the existence of God is the love and care that real friends, brothers and sisters in our faith, showed us in this time of tragedy. When we felt like we were down for the count they came along side and carried us. It was like we were being carried on stretchers by so many people that chose to help us face this and that decided to go side by side with us every step of this long journey. I want to thank all who have been praying and supporting us through this. Words can not express our thankfulness. You know who you are and I believe you will all be rewarded greatly for all you have done.
We are starting our lives over right now. With all the legal expenses and now with a slowing (all most dead) tourism business and economy it is going to be a long road to financial recovery. We have made the adjustments we can and I am so excited to get back to work and see what we can make of all of this. When you go through a challenge of this scale you are a changed person. It can ruin some but by the grace of God we have come out of this so much stronger. Trees get their strength and stability by being stressed by wind. The roots grow stronger and hold the tree in place to stand strong in future winds. I have learned not to resist what I believe God brings my way. I embrace it, whether good or a challenge, and trust God to do His work even when we think things are too much for us to handle.
Michael has rededicated his life to God. You hear of jail house conversions but his faith and concern for Fred's family over the past year has made a big impression on me and those that come in contact with Michael. God has used him in mighty ways in the lives of some of the most unlikely and unloved people in our world. This past year Michael has been in what is ranked as one of the worst facilities in our country. No windows and about 30 years old. On his block there were only 28 prisoner, all maximum security. The worst of the worst all waiting for trial. There were two others there longer than Michael but the rest came and went with new cell mates all the time. Although Michael could not give me all the details I got the over all picture of the situation and it would take a real faith is God to not only keep your faith but to share it and put it into action in that environment. Michael has keep and shared his faith. One of the most touching parts of his trial was to see the steady stream of ex-cell mates that showed up for Michaels trial to support him. There were about 5 of them that all did their best to clean up and go to the place they most likely hate the most (the court house) to support Michael. After talking to several of them they were there for one reason. They felt Michael did not belong in this situation and because Michael had an impact on each of their spiritual lives in some way. After about a week of being in the jail Michael started opening the door to his cell just before lock down at night. He would pray and invited any one else that wanted to have Michael pray for them to join him. After a few days a few men joined him. It started to grow to where they moved it from his cell to the main room. At one time there were about 20 of the 28 men wanting prayer. Michael judged no one. He got along with almost all of them. Lives are changed because of him. Mostly Michael's life was changed, and the life of our family, but also those he was able to touch, even in some small way over this past year. I am sure this will not change over the next several years while we still try to sort all of this out, but for now this chapter is coming to an end and we are back. I wrote this long post to get this all out and as part of the healing process that you need to go though when you face major disasters. Things are clearer now, I feel more creative than in years and we are ready to get back to life. On Good Friday, the day we celebrate the death of Christ, it is appropriate to look at the good things that come from what our world would consider bad things. That is what this year has been all about. To the world this looks like one of the most tragic situations a family could face. It was very hard but there is so much that most people do not see behind the scenes that show the good that can come from such dark times. Thank God for the Good Friday's in our lives.

Another Whale of a Day
I took my two sisters out on the boat yesterday morning to go see some whales. I have been working on repairing a leak in my boat for about 2 weeks. Mission Accomplished. I know some of you can't believe that I repaired it my self. Desperate times call for desperate moves. We are very low on the money gage right now so I could not afford anyone to do it. Anyway yesterday was fun as always but an adventure. Very rough and windy and cold. Not your typical day in Paradise. We were drenched by the end of the trip and very few whale sightings. We were close to a breach but the wind and surf made it hard to see.
24 hours later. Clear. Calm and warm. Your typical day in paradise and the whales were off the chart. We even saw the very very rare double breach. I got a shot. Even though it is not very sharp it at least proves we saw it. We also had a baby and mother swim under our boat 4 times. I felt very small in our 20 foot boat. The last time we saw the mother, escort whale and the baby all swimming one on top of the other. I grabbed my underwater housing and the camera had a dead battery. Yiks I could kick myself for that bonehead move. Oh well. It will be in my brain shots for life. You know the shots where you forgot your camera and the most amazing situation appears and your shot is in your head but that is it. Memory only. Anyway here are a few shots I though you might enjoy and by the way the boat is still afloat!
One of my favorite tail shots ever.

Dolphins
We had a great day on the boat. We were looking for the first whales of the season but did not see any. We did come across a school of dolphins and spent about and hour with them. We even got to swim with them. My underwater housing is in the shop. Darn. We also had a killer day snorkeling. The visibility was off the chart and we saw so many turtles. It was so calm today and here is a shot of our dolphin friends. We did hear some whales with the hydraphone off in the distance but did not see any. In about 2 weeks they should be everywhere. We are excited.

Haleakala Overnight
Two days ago a group of us went into the crater and spent the night. For those of you that are not familiar with Haleakala it is an amazing place. The summit is 10,000 feet. It is the largest crater in the world. There are two cabins on the floor of the crater and several camp sites for tents. We stayed in one of the cabins and that was my first time doing that. I have stayed several times in tents but the cabins were sweet! It gets very cold in the crater and snows a couple times a year. Yes snow in Hawaii. It dropped to about 40 degrees the night we were there and it was as clear as I have ever seen it. At the top of the crater NASA has a telescope and tracks space junk. There was a half moon that hid the stars at first but when I got up to go to the bathroom at 3am it was down and the stars were stellar. Yes one of the clearest places on earth. I sat there for about 15 minutes just taking it all in.
I chose God of Wonders as the song for the slide show because there is no way that you can sit there and look at the starts and space for any length of time and not believe there is a
God. When you see something as majestic as that you are looking God in the eye!
There is a large lave tube that is about a quarter mile long and up to about 40 foot ceilings in spots. I had never been in there before and it was very cool. Actually cold.
One of the things that is most amazing about the center of the crater is how quiet it is. Your ears will ring when you get out because they get adjusted to the quiet and have to adjust to the noise again. It can get so quiet when there is no wind that you can even hear your heart beat! It has happened to me twice in the crater.
This has been such a tough and challenging year for our family and this was such a great way to get away from the daily grind and get in touch with God. I am so glad I went and am so blessed to have friends like those in our group. They are such a support and so much fon to be around. We all had a blast and ate so well. Here is a photo of the crater and you can click here to view the slide show that will give you a taste of being in the crater.

Pumpkin Carving Tradition
Honestly I have not ditched this blog. I know I have lost most of my faithful followers due to a lack of entries but I have been making up for lost time with my photography blog that has taken most of my time to get up and going. It is active and I have it under control so I will be back here way more often. For those of you that are close to our family thank for all your prayers and thoughts. We are already planning a mongo, gargantous, New Years party saying good bye and good riddens to 2008 and welcoming in a new year. We have grown a lot this year and been pressed to the limits and that is how growth and maturity take place. I gues we will be very big and wise by the end of this year.
For me the day after Holloween marks the begining of the Christmas season and I will be starting the Christmas music tomorrow. Can't wait. Do to all that has happened this year it will be a modest Christmas and we will be staying close to home.
As any of you who have followed this blog for years know we have an annual pumpkin carving party at my sisters house. Some years it is bigger than others and this year was one of the smaller ones but no less fun. We had some great entries. Zack and his friend Calib did a bat cave, Lexi did a bat, uncle Bill did a Mummy and this year I tackled a frog. All in all I think they came out well. We had a cool and rainy night last night. A rare thing here on Maui but got us in the fall spirit. Here are a few shots.

Busy but Slowing Down
We have been so busy for the past let say 9 years. I was going to say for few months but looking back it is a bit longer. We are slowing down long enough to reorganize things and do some marketing of our businesses. It is an exciting time and as the economy grinds to a major slow down there is not better way to do that. I have not posted very much here because we have had some very serious family issues this past year starting with both of my parents passing away last year. Then there is another matter I can not comment on yet. For those of you who do know what is up please pray for God's wisdom and intervention on October 16th and 17th. I promise I have a lot to post about this as soon as it is over. You will understand why I can not comment now when I explain it all soon.
I have spent a lot of my time this past month building a new blog for Hawaiian Images. Check it out by clicking here. Please comment there when you go. I am trying to test the comment section out now. I will have these two blogs going and one for our Their Eyes Africa project when we get back up to speed there. We are planning another trip to Africa in the spring if all goes well.
Thanks for your patience and I am so looking forward to this years end and the upcoming 2009. I think it will be a great year.
Here is an image from a recent wedding that is on the new HI blog.

About Me

I am a destination wedding photographer on Maui. I have shot over 1,000 weddings here since moving to Hawaii in 1999. Before moving to Hawaii I had a comercial photgraphy studio in Portland Oregon and had Nike as my main client for over 15 years. I have never looked back since moving to Hawaii and never take for granted what a beautiful place God made when He made Maui. I am blessed and privelaged to be able to live here. I have a passion for shooting weddings and helping homeless children in third world countries. I love my family and my life. God is so good.
