  • Underwater Pics

I am planning to add an underwater photo every two weeks.  I am trying to get a good portfolio of underwater shots now that I have this amazing underwater camera.  I recently got the Panazonic LX5 camera.  It has a fast Leica lens and also has HD video.  I bought a TenBar underwater aluminum housing that is so solid and has great controls. This is a photo of a Moorish Idol that I took at the Cathedrals diving spot on the island of Lanai.  It was a great dive and got some great shots.

  • Find the Fish

I took my two sisters and Zach snorkeling today and we found a Stone fish.  They are very poisonous and we do not see them very often.  This was a very large one.  About 10 inches across.  They blend in very well so are hard to see.  He was about 15 feet down on the side of a ledge on the reef.

  • Food For Thought

I am editing Sundays wedding. I am down to only 1466 images. I am adjusting now. But read this quote this morning and have been pondering it.

    C. S. Lewis observed, "The more we let God take us over, the more truly ourselves we become - because he made us. He invented all the different people that you and I were intended to be. It is when I turn to Christ, when I give up myself to His personality, that I first begin to have a real personality of my own."

  • Tomorrows Bride With iPad Today

Been wondering what you can do with the iPad for weddings?  Well today was my first test and boy was it a home run. Actually out of the park.  I am shooting an all day wedding tomorrow at one of my favorite ocean front estates tomorrow.  We shot the rehearsal this morning and then went to a brunch.  I have the SD card reader for the iPad.  It is very easy to use.  You put in your SD card, plug it into the iPad and your photos load.  It took about 1 minute for 2 gigs to show up in thumbnails.  You then just touch the ones you want for a quick pick then touch import.  You can import all or selected.  It took about another minute to upload about 50 images.  By the way I shoot jpeg.  Have not tried to load raw files yet.

After everyone had ordered there food there is a lag time before the food arrives.  I will do this tomorrow for the dinner also.  I hit slide show on the ipad and handed it to the bride.  Having the latest technology is always good but when it makes you look great that is even better.    Everyone that was watching it looked over at me and had an "are you kidding me" look on their faces.  Many thumbs up by them.  It was a major hit and worth every penny I spent on it.

The images are so dang clear and beautiful this is amazing as an image viewer.  So by all means use it at your weddings.  Takes about 2 minutes to make a slide show to hand your bride and the images look great.  Today was a test that worked great.  I will let you know how it is excepted at the wedding tomorrow night.

  • iPad For Now and Forever!

We sold our G5 Tower and 21 inch Cinema Display and bought 2 iPads and all the stuff to go with them.  In this picture there are 2 iPads (one 32 and one 64gig), an iPad case, the Dock Keyboard, the wirless keyboard, the camera card attachments, and the VGA projection cord.

I have tried all of these and am thinking about doing some short video podcasts on how to use this stuff.  Apple has this attitude of in their tutorials on showing you what things do but are lacking greatly on how to do it.  Like do you know how to make mailboxes in your iPad Mail?  Do you know how to print from your iPad?  Things like that.  There are limits to what this can do but that being said we are all used to our lap tops but there are a lot of things they can not do either.  We expect this little gem to do everything.  It is great, no beyond great, at what it does.  More will be added but it is a game changer for reading books, viewing and showing off photos right away, for surfing the web and reading e-mail.  The external keyboards are a must.

The doc Keyboard has some keys that are just for the iPad and that makes if very cool but the wireless keyboard is what we are all used to.  It is the same blue tooth keyboard you are already using.  Works great.

I will be posting very soon details as I get them on how to do stuff on it.

  • Is now the time?

So my last post said that it was time for me go get going again.  That was last September.  Boy how things change.  The one thing I have realized is that I have lost so many entries on my blog and that is one of the most valuable parts of a blog.  Going back and seeing where you were.  I am on facebook but have been resisting.  I have a twitter account but do not use it.  Blogs are becoming less popular because of the need for speed in communications but I still think that blogs are going to survive.  The speedy trends  of facebook and twitter will fill a need but I think that blogs, or some kind of form of a blog will be a long lasting player in the social media world.

My life is changing.  Weddings are down 60% in Hawaii so I have had to branch out with my photography and find other streams of income for us to survive.  Some of you know but most do not know that I had a photography studio on Portland Oregon for over 15 years before I moved to Maui.  My main client was Nike for over 15 years.  We shot a lot of shoes and athletes.  (You also did not know that my track coach started Nike the years that I was running for him at the University of Oregon. Boy do I have stories about that.  Like smelling the burning rubber from the waffle Irons making waffle soles for running shoes.  Well that is a whole other post) Since moving to Hawaii I have shot over 1,000 destination weddings.  Enough for 10 photographers life time dreams.  I still love it but have been thinking a lot about what my passion is.  For most people it would be taking pictures.  For me it is the whole experience.  Telling the story.  Planning out the shoot.  Getting what you planned and more and then doing something with the shots.  I like all of that.  My true passion comes out when I get to do all these for projects that make a difference.  I will be posting about the new developments about where I am headed.  You will be surprised.  There are so many things to share.  I can't wait.

  • Things They Are A Changin

I have sure been missing in action.  Sorry about that.  I really wanted to sit down and update this site so many times but it was like my fingers were stuck in cement.  I feel like now is the time and this is the place to start up again.  I really love blogs because you can go back and relive the highlights of your life over the past few years.  I want to be able to do that.  I stopped writing in my journal and blogging both here and on my photo site.  I will be getting back up to speed this week.  Boy a lot has happened the past two years.  The economy has taken a toll on so many Maui wedding businesses.  We are hanging in there and having the oldest Wedding company on Maui really helps.  I am very excited for what lies ahead and even though we are facing some huge challenges I am confident the best is yet to come.  More soon.

  • Easter.  Resurrection and New Beginnings!

I am so glad that Easter 2009 is here.  When you go though times where it seems that all is taken away, things are hopeless, and darkness surrounds you that is the perfect time for restarts.  When all is stripped away then everything that comes your way from then on is new.  The way you see life and the way you look at things around you changes.  This has been a year to look forward to a resurrection.  We are ready.

We have had some weird weather on Maui this past year.  Wetter and much colder than usual.  Today is bright, sunny, warm with light trade winds expected.  A great illustration and picture for what I believe this year is going to be like.  I believe that the sun will be shinning on my family this year.  We are so blessed to have friends and family like we do.  Life is good and God is great.  Happy Easter and I hope everyone that will open up will let the love of God fill them in a new way today that will let them experience the real Resurrection power of the Almighty.

  • Good Friday?

A blessed Good Friday to all of you!
Why do we call it "Good" when such a bad thing hap

    pened,namely the death of Jesus?
For that matter, how could it be a good thing that God in human form would die such a tragic death.
We could apply the same question to tragedy in our own lives.
    Why did this happen?
Could anything good ever come out of it?
We call this 'Good Friday' because the greatest good imaginable resulted.
The satisfying of the righteous demands of God almighty as Jesus died in our place.
And God will in His time,"Bring good out of bad" in your life as well as you walk with and Glorify Him.
                                                                                    (Greg Laurie)

I have not been on this blog for most of last year.  Those that follow my Facebook have heard all kinds of vague suggestions of the tragedy that hit our family.  I could not talk about it for over a year.  It devastated our family and made this year the hardest year of our lives.  Even though the economy was quite a blow, we did not even hardly notice it because of the events that struck our family this past year.  I completely agree with Pastor Greg Laurie on this subject and since it is good Friday I thought it would be a great time to start posting again since we are in the process of rebuilding our lives.

It was Superbowl Sunday 2007.We were sitting in Church.  The sermon was about the consequences of sin in our lives. About half way through the sermon we got the call. Our son Michael had been out partying all night and ended up in the hot tub at his condo complex at about 5 in the morning with 3 other friends.  They had all been drinking a lot, had snorted cocaine and were in a 106 degree hot tub for over an hour.  This was a recept for disaster and one of the worst possible things happened. One of Michael's friends drowned.  Michael was accused of second degree manslaughter ( had some part in an accidental death).  We were devastated as we know that it would not be in Michael to hurt anyone.  The events over the next few days are too complicated to go into here but a "run away grand jury"  decided to up the charge to Murder with no evidence of intent.  There was no way in the world that Michael intended to kill anyone, especially a friend.  We had to pool together all of our financial resources and hire an attorney and spent a year preparing Michael's case.  He sat in a county jail for almost 14 months waiting the trial.  This all happened in Oregon where there are some of the harshest and craziest laws and each of them seemed to creep into Michaels case.  The trial lasted almost a month and in the end Michael was found innocent of Murder by a 12 to 0 vote by the jury.  He was convicted of manslaughter because of one of the very unjust Oregon laws.  He was sentenced to 10 years in Prison with no possibility of time off for no previous record or even for good behavior.  Another crazy Oregon law. We will be appealing his case  but in the mean time our son, who I went on mission trips to Mexico with, sits in an Oregon prison because of horse play gone terribly wrong and because of the stupid mutual participation in excess drinking and drugs.  It was a night that could have just as easily left either Michael dead, Fred in prison or both young men dead.

This event paralyzed our family and made it hard to function.  For several weeks we were in serious shock.  One of the biggest evidences of the existence of God is the love and care that real friends, brothers and sisters in our faith, showed us in this time of tragedy. When we felt like we were down for the count they came along side and carried us.  It was like we were being carried on stretchers by so many people that chose to help us face this and that decided to go side by side with us every step of this long journey. I want to thank all who have been praying and supporting us through this.  Words can not express our thankfulness.  You know who you are and I believe you will all be rewarded greatly for all you have done.

We are starting our lives over right now.  With all the legal expenses and now with a slowing (all most dead) tourism business and economy it is going to be a long road to financial recovery.  We have made the adjustments we can and I am so excited to get back to work and see what we can make of all of this.  When you go through a challenge of this scale you are a changed person.  It can ruin some but by the grace of God we have come out of this so much stronger.  Trees get their strength and stability by being stressed by wind.  The roots grow stronger and hold the tree in place to stand strong in future winds.  I have learned not to resist what I believe God brings my way.  I embrace it, whether good or a challenge, and trust God to do His work even when we think things are too much for us to handle.

Michael has rededicated his life to God.  You hear of jail house conversions but his faith and concern for Fred's family over the past year has made a big impression on me and those that come in contact with Michael.  God has used him in mighty ways in the lives of some of the most unlikely and unloved people in our world.  This past year Michael has been in what is ranked as one of the worst facilities in our country.  No windows and about 30 years old.  On his block there were only 28 prisoner, all maximum security.  The worst of the worst all waiting for trial.  There were two others there longer than Michael but the rest came and went with new cell mates all the time.  Although Michael could not give me all the details I got the over all picture of the situation and it would take a real faith is God to not only keep your faith but to share it and put it into action in that environment.  Michael has keep and shared his faith.  One of the most touching parts of his trial was to see the steady stream of ex-cell mates that showed up for Michaels trial to support him.  There were about 5 of them that all did their best to clean up and go to the place they most likely hate the most (the court house) to support Michael.  After talking to several of them they were there for one reason.  They felt Michael did not belong in this situation and because Michael had an impact on each of their spiritual lives in some way.  After about a week of being in the jail Michael started opening the door to his cell just before lock down at night.  He would pray and invited any one else that wanted to have Michael pray for them to join him.  After a few days a few men joined him. It started to grow to where they moved it from his cell to the main room.  At one time there were about 20 of the 28 men wanting prayer.  Michael judged no one.  He got along with almost all of them.  Lives are changed because of him.  Mostly Michael's life was changed, and the life of our family, but also those he was able to touch, even in some small way over this past year.  I am sure this will not change over the next several years while we still try to sort all of this out, but for now this chapter is coming to an end and we are back.  I wrote this long post to get this all out and as part of the healing process that you need to go though when you face major disasters.  Things are clearer now, I feel more creative than in years and we are ready to get back to life.  On Good Friday, the day we celebrate the death of Christ, it is appropriate to look at the good things that come from what our world would consider bad things.  That is what this year has been all about.  To the world this looks like one of the most tragic situations a family could face.  It was very hard but there is so much that most people do not see behind the scenes that show the good that can come from such dark times.  Thank God for the Good Friday's in our lives.

I have a passion for shooting weddings and helping homeless children in third world countries. I love my family and my life. God is so good.
